On Friday, February 16th – a wet and dreary day – GEAR UP College & Career Guide Crystal Jones accompanied a group of 9th & 10th grade students from CCHS on a tour of Lindsey Wilson College. Even though it was raining like cats and dogs all day, everyone had so much fun touring the college. The group was blessed that Regina Haugen, Director of Human Resources, provided ponchos for everyone! The tour guide was incredible! She told stories about her experiences at Lindsey Wilson and answered questions for any student. The group toured several buildings on campus, including the Chapel. Students learned about a certain spot within the Chapel where a person can stand and say something, and hear it echo all around, but no one else can hear it. The kids thought it was cool! The students were troopers and learned that not every day will be sunny and roses on campus once they start college. They were made aware that even when it is raining or snowing, classes still go on and students must get up, get ready, and head to class. After the tour and lunch on campus, students were able to meet with Laura, the director of career services. She facilitated a leadership / team building activity with the students. The students were put into groups with an envelope containing supplies, such as tape, string, and spaghetti. The task was to build the tallest structure out of spaghetti that could stand on its own and could hold a marshmallow at the very top. The marshmallow could not be pushed onto the spaghetti. It was a great activity for the students interact with one another, listen to different ideas, and then come up with a plan.
