As we enter the latter part of winter and look for spring soon to arrive, I want to share with you some exciting activities taking place within our school system. Student safety continues to be a top priority, and we can add two recently completed initiatives that will improve safety for our students. The middle school now has in place an entry design for visitors similar to other schools in our district. Visitors will enter into a vestibule where they can speak with a receptionist, but not have access to the remainder of the building. This has been a welcomed change by our parents and staff in our schools throughout the district, and we anticipate positive feedback for this change at our middle school as well. Also, our middle school and high school recently completed a Safe School Assessment conducted by the Kentucky Center for School Safety. This is the second such assessment each school has completed, with the initial assessment having been conducted several years ago. The teams were very complementary of our efforts to improve safety, and they shared some recommendations that could enhance student safety. Another initiative that could have a dramatic impact academically is the creation of a district instructional rounds network. Composed of teachers along with school and district leaders, this network is performing instructional rounds as explained in the book Instructional Rounds in Education by Richard Elmore. After a book study and additional professional development, the network completed its initial rounds at the Early Childhood Center in January. The goal for the network is two-fold: to promote growth in the instructional leadership capacity of individuals in the network, and to provide the school recommendations for improvement in targeted areas identified by the school. Lastly, congratulations are in order to our athletic and academic teams for their successes thus far. And with district, regional, and state competitions upcoming, we are anticipating opportunities to share with you numerous accomplishments in the near future.
