ATNOR

ATNOR an organizational technique for On-Demand Writing

A – audience – Who is expected to read this writing?

T – topic – the broad, general topic

N – narrow topic – this includes the topic and the writer’s position on the topic (often that means – Are you for, in favor of, or against, opposed to, the proposed action of the topic?

O – objections – If another person disagrees with the writer’s position, what would be the explanations

(or reasons) given  for that disagreement. This will be the opposite side of the writer’s reasons.

R – reasons –  three reasons why the action proposed by the writer should be taken

Thesis= N+R – narrow topic plus the three reasons

EXAMPLE

A- the Clinton County Board of Education

T – school uniforms

N – There should be school uniforms

O – there should NOT be school uniforms because 1) they inhibit student self-expression, 2) could be

hard to find the required clothing, 3) it would be more expensive

R – there should be school uniforms because 1) there are less behavior problems with uniforms, 2) there

is a greater sense of school unity, and 3) all students look similar thus avoiding the status differences

of designer clothes verses non designer clothes

Thesis – There should be school uniforms because there are less behavior problems with uniforms, there

is a greater sense of school unity, and all students look similar thus avoiding the status differences of

designer clothes verses non designer clothes
